The control of cell growth can be lost in the body and abnormal cells can grow. Cancer is what these abnormal cells are called. Benign cancer cells are not dangerous. These abnormal cancer cells, spread through the blood and lymph systems. Cancer cells can form in nearly any type of tissue in the human body, meaning there are many types of Cancers. 1 out of 2 Australian men are diagnosed with Cancer and the statistic is 1 out of 3 for women. 605 of people diagnosed with cancer will live 5 or more years after the diagnosis. A tumour forms in in the tissue in either one or both of the lungs. The tumour can form in the lung or it could’ve spread from another part of the body. \nThere are different types of Lung Cancer: Small cell Lung Cancer, which usually starts in the middle of the lungs and spreads quickly. It is made up of small cells and makes up 15-20% of all Lung Cancer diagnoses. Non- Small Cell Lung Cancer usually occurs in the Bronchi or airways of the lungs. It makes up 75 - 80% of all Lung Cancer diagnoses. Lung Cancer is the 5th Most common Cancer in Australia but causes the most deaths out of any cancer in Australia for men and women. But some symptoms found in the early stages of Lung Cancer include Coughing, a persistent cough that doesn't go away. A cough like this may be mistaken as nothing by the individual but it can be a warning sign for Lung Cancer and should be checked out. Haemoptysis, also known as coughing up blood can be a warning sign for Lung Cancer. Even though coughing up blood (even a small amount) can be caused by many things, one of the conditions that causes it is Lung Cancer. So if you are coughing blood you should see a doctor right away. Breathlessness can be caused by Lung Cancer. If you are feeling consistently out of breath you should see a doctor. Lung Cancer can block the airways, meaning you are more likely to get chest infections such as Bronchitis and Pneumonia. Having a chest infection means that the cancer is harder to detect from an X-Ray. Consistent Chest infections may be caused by Lung Cancer so it should be checked by a doctor. Persistent pain in the chest or back should be checked out by a doctor as it can be caused by Lung Cancer. When a lung cancer spreads to to the top of the lung it can put pressure on the armpit. Pressure in the arm pit can cause pain in the shoulder and hand. Other early symptoms of Lung Cancer are sustained fatigue and a hoarse voice.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":676347,"object_id":"SamPonsford1362379339","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"Lung Cancer: Treatment","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":610200,"object_id":"SamPonsford1362379650","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"There a 3 Main Types of Lung Cancer Treatment: One option is Surgery. Surgery usually happens when it is in the early stages and the cancer hasn't spread to other parts of the body. The medical team will assess your general well-being, breathing capacity and fitness to see if surgery is an option for you. The are 3 types of lung surgery, a Wedge Resection, where only a small part of the lung ( not a lobe) is removed. Another option is a Lobectomy where only 1 lobe is removed. The last option is a Pneunectomy where one whole lung is removed. Another treatment option for cancer is Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is when the cancer is treated with drugs designed to kill the cancer cells, without damaging healthy cells. Chemotherapy mainly occurs to kill tumours that are too large for surgery., Chemotherapy can also before surgery, to shrink the cancer and make the operation easier. It also occurs before or during radiotherapy to increase the chance of it working. It can also occur after surgery to decrease the chances of the cancer coming back. Radiotherapy is when X-Ray Beams are used to kill cancer cells. It sometimes occurs before the cancer has spread to the Lymph system, to prevent it from spreading or to prevent the cancer from coming back. Like Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy can be used before and after surgery. The last type of treatment for Lung Cancer is Palliative Treatment. Palliative Treatment mainly occurs once the Lung Cancer has been considered Terminal. Palliative Treatment is not aimed at treating the disease, but it is aimed at treating the symptoms of the Lung Cancer. Palliative Treatment also aims at relieving the patient from pain and improving their well-being and quality of life.
