A collaborative process of investigation is explored and children are encouraged to ASK QUESTIONS, CONTRIBUTE IDEAS and THINK CRITICALLY. \n\nTHE TEACHER'S ROLE:\nTeachers are viewed as the guiders throughout the learning. They plan learning opportunities to extend and challenge students’ thinking and support them in the process of investigation. REFLECTION, EVALUATION and CRITICAL ANALYSIS play a vital role in generating understanding and cognitive development. \n\n‘Inquiry pedagogy requires the teacher to probe, listen and to observe; to provide open ended tasks, to explore rather than assume ‘the known’; to treat the understanding as a process of construction and reconstruction over time and to help students learn to reflect both on the process of learning as well as the content.’ (Murdoch, 2012)","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":990907,"object_id":"alinam1366689387","particle_type":"quote","picture":null,"text":"‘Inquiry pedagogy requires the teacher to probe, listen and to observe; to provide open ended tasks, to explore rather than assume ‘the known’; to treat the understanding as a process of construction and reconstruction over time and to help students learn to reflect both on the process of learning as well as the content.’","content_type":"","title":" (Murdoch, 2012)","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":990925,"object_id":"alinam1366689569","particle_type":"maintitle","picture":null,"text":"Theories relating to Inquiry Learning ","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":990929,"object_id":"alinam1366689598","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"VYGOTSKY - \n‘The distance between the actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance, or in collaboration with more capable peers\" (Vygotsky, 1978, p86) \n\nPIAGET - \n‘Children construct an understanding of the world around them, then experience discrepancies between what they already know and what they discover in their environment.’ (McLeod, 2012)\n\nBRUNER -\n‘Bruner proposes that learners’ construct their own knowledge and do this by organizing and categorizing information using a coding system. This suggests that ‘learners are active in constructing their own knowledge and social interactions are important in the knowledge construction process’ (Woolfolk and Margetts, 2010, p.347) By reflecting on these experiences, students assimilate useful information and create personal knowledge.’","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":991974,"object_id":"alinam1366703050","particle_type":"maintitle","picture":null,"text":"H.S.I.E & Inquiry Learning ","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":991978,"object_id":"alinam1366703112","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"One of the six primary Key Learning Areas (KLAs) Human Society and Its Environment involves the ‘study of people, cultures, societies and environments. By learning to do this, they can their beliefs to that of the community and furthermore the rest of the world. By integrating ICT elements in the process of inquiry learning throughout the content of HSIE, the skills of critical inquiry and reflection that are a major component of this KLA are made much easier. \n\nThe ideas and perspectives that students acquire makes inquiry learning a useful way of developing deep understanding of issues that are complex and that may relate to all citizens. As cited in Reynolds (2012) the following six points are strategies that assist in inquiry learning approach:\n1. Encourage independent learning, motivate students to find things out for themselves.\n2. Encourage students to articulate ideas.\n3. Assist students in putting their learning together, i.e. graphic organisers. \n4. Address concepts from different viewpoints/perspectives.\n5. Provide valuable and interactive feedback about the learning.\n6.
