Thales was the first western philosopher in history by proposing explanations for natural occurrences. Anaxagoras was the first to try and explain the cosmos. Xenophanes went against religious institutions by attacking the amorphism of the deities of the time. Pythagoras was the first to explain the universe in mathematical terms. Heraclitus was the very first metaphysican of the western world. Zeno came up with a list of paradoxes to support his teachers teachings, using prose instead of poetry. Socrates, considered the father of philosophy, challenged current systems of belief and felt that virtue is knowledge. Plato came up with the concept of forms, in which there is a deeper truth of beauty (for instance). Aristotle was the father of logic, and rejected his teachers belief of forms. St. Augustine is a father of the Catholic Church and adapted Platonic thought to Christian belief.
