Prescott, has the second highest percentages. As Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University and Prescott is home to one of the two main campuses for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (the other being located in Daytona Beach, FL), it is not surprising that these two county seats, and their corresponding counties as a whole, have higher percentages of college graduates than the other three. Also, Flagstaff and Prescott, and by extension Coconino and Yavapai Counties, have larger populations than the other three, and due to this larger work force, more employers have been drawn to establish businesses there. Many of these employers require employees with the skillset of a college education, and as such, there are higher concentrations of college graduates living in those counties.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137826,"object_id":"10100916_1367719861","particle_type":"image","picture":"http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/infogram-particles-700/10100916_1367719861.jpg"},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137833,"object_id":"101009161367719979","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"Looking At It Another Way...","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137836,"object_id":"10100916_1367720021","particle_type":"image","picture":"http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/infogram-particles-700/10100916_1367720021.jpg"},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137838,"object_id":"101009161367720031","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"This map, from Mapping America, a pairing of Google Earth/Google Maps and U.S. Census Data from 2005 to 2009, depicts chartographically what the graph above already told us about the educational attainment in Northwestern Arizona. As can be seen from the map, the only county in the NW region of Arizona to have more than 10% of its population holding a Master’s Degree or higher is Coconino County, where Northern Arizona University is located. The only other county in the whole state of Arizona that can say the same thing, having 20% to 30% of its population holding Master’s Degrees or higher, is Pima County, where the University of Arizona is located, in its county seat of Tucson. Even Maricopa County, the largest of the 15 counties in Arizona, and home to Arizona State University, one of the largest universities in the country and the largest in the state of Arizona, does not match up percentage wise when looking at advanced educational attainment.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137841,"object_id":"101009161367720100","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"A Look At Income Levels in the 5 NW Counties","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137842,"object_id":"10100916_1367720153","particle_type":"image","picture":"http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/infogram-particles-700/10100916_1367720153.jpg"},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137849,"object_id":"101009161367720211","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"Despite having the second lowest educational attainment of the five NW counties as far as college degrees are concerned, St. Johns has the highest mean income earnings of the five NW counties at $55,052. In the year 2000, this value was only $35,215. An explanation for this large increase might be that one of St. Johns’ major industries is mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction. This accounts for 8% of industry in St. Johns, whereas when looking at this industry in the state of Arizona as a whole, the percentage is 1% or less. This county’s large share in this lucrative industry could explain why this county has the highest income earnings. With the increase in gas prices over the past 13 years, one can conclude again that this county’s large share in the oil and gas industry is responsible for such a drastic change in income earnings over such a short period of time. If gas prices continue to trend as they have over the past 13 years, and use of alternatives for fossil fuels do not become mainstream, one can assume that the mean income earnings values will continue to increase as time passes.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137873,"object_id":"10100916_1367720622","particle_type":"image","picture":"http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/infogram-particles-700/10100916_1367720622.jpg"},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137864,"object_id":"101009161367720471","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"A Look At Employment and Poverty","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137866,"object_id":"10100916_1367720498","particle_type":"image","picture":"http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/infogram-particles-700/10100916_1367720498.jpg"},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1137872,"object_id":"101009161367720581","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"Flagstaff and Holbrook, despite having the highest employment levels of the five NW counties at 67.1% and 56.4% respectfully, have the highest percentages of people living below the poverty line.
