Votes are then counted but do not decide anything as it is the votes of the Electoral\nCollege that decide who becomes the president.\n\nThere are all together 538 electoral votes and a candidate needs to get 270, more than half, to win.\n\nElectoral Geography influences who is decided to be president because the political party of the candidates up for election decides which states will be giving them votes. This is because electors are often chosen for their dedication to the state government which is primarily one party.\n\nThe electors of each state are supposed to cast their votes based upon what the residents of the states have voted, but it is very simple for their votes to be entirely different and\nsway the election in a completely different direction.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":709230,"object_id":"becky02511362975374","particle_type":"image","picture":"http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/infogram-particles-700/becky02511362975374.jpg"},{"type":"particle","particle_id":709237,"object_id":"becky02511362975508","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"(above) Presidential election results for 2012 with electoral college votes for each state.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":683374,"object_id":"becky02511362492362","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"House of Representatives","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":709107,"object_id":"becky02511362974652","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"Each member serves for 2 years and has to meet the conditions of being at least 25 years old, a citizen of the United States for at least 7 years, and be a resident of the state from\nthe state they hope to be elected.\nNumber of representatives from each state is based upon the population of the state.\n\nEvery ten years the United States takes a census and counts how many people live in each state in order to accurately distribute the 435 seats in the House among the 50 states.\nCongressional districts are then laid down and a representative is elected from each district that is drawn.\n\nElectoral geography plays a role in the elections of representatives due to the districts that are drawn after every census often by the candidate who manipulates lines to influence the outcome of voting, a process known as gerrymandering\n\nGerrymandering is an issue in HOR elections because communities that represent certain ethnicities are split into different districts and their votes are then useless because they often have a collective opinion, but their population is no longer in their favor.\nRace, political party, and community, are all factors of electoral geography that can lead to a problem with redistricting and end up losing or gaining an influence on the outcome\nof an election.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"chart","chart_id":1101141,"object_id":"becky0251_1362975531","chart_type_nr":3,"data":[[[],["Democratic","201"],["Republican","234"]]],"custom":{},"colors":[],"dimensions":[],"modifier":0,"sheetnames":[],"sheets_settings":[]},{"type":"particle","particle_id":674104,"object_id":"becky02511362492389","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"Senate","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":709083,"object_id":"becky02511362971317","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"2 Senators are elected from each state no matter what the population of that state is.
