Students learned by changing behavior using positive and negative reinforcement (reward and punishment). There are two types that make up Behaviorism- Ivan Pavlov's Classical Conditioning and B.F. Skinner's Operant Conditioning. Pavlov trained his dogs to show that there is an association between two stimuli. Skinner showed used rats and pigeons to show that organisms will slowly alter their responses based upon the consequences; an action or response is more likely to occur if there is a positive response and less likely if there is a negative one. The overall concept of behaviorism is that a learner's reponse is contingent on the student's personal motivation. So, for example, if a student is motivated by getting good grades, the positive or negative reinforcement will be his or her grades. The learner is a passive component in the learning process. He or she simply reponds to given content and demonstrates an understanding of the goal or objective.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1553271,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370886418","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"Cognitivism","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"chart","chart_id":2059901,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings_1370886446","chart_type_nr":23,"data":[[["1960's and 1970's","Understand the learner's mind, improve the learner.","profilePath",""],["","",""]]],"custom":{},"colors":[],"dimensions":[],"modifier":0,"sheetnames":[],"sheets_settings":[]},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1553292,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370886576","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"Cognitivism was the shift from instruction being solely based on behavior, and shifting to a learner's performance. Performance varies from \"novice\" to \"expert\". Individual differences are not taken into consideration during the creation of instruction. This is where educators begin using pretests and various other formative assessments. Cognitivism used planning, influence of prior knowledge, beliefs, etc. to understand how learners acquire their knowledge. This theory works by taking more complex information that must be learned, breaking it down into its smaller parts, and connecting it to prior knowledge. This approach to learning helped experts and educators alike understand how information is processed, and how prior knowledge is stored and recalled in specific contexts. According to cognitivism, new information being processed properly is influenced by how information is presented and how relevant it is. So, for example, if too much information is presented at one time, the learner may have a hard time deciphering, organizing and applying it all. Robert Gagne proposed nine elements that essentially explain how to organize the learning process to ensure optimal learning: (1) Gain the learners' attention, (2) Inform learners of objectives, (3) Call upon prior knowledge, (4) Provide guidance, (5) Elicit performance through activities, (6) Provide feedback, (7) Assess the learners' performance, and (9) Enhance retention and transfer to schema (location of stored prior knowledge). Unlike in behaviorism, learners take a more active role in their learning by actively organizing the information that they learn.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1553542,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370888478","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"Constructivism","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"chart","chart_id":2060212,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings_1370888497","chart_type_nr":23,"data":[[["1980's","Connect to a learner's experiences, improve the learner.","profilePath",""],["","",""]]],"custom":{},"colors":[],"dimensions":[],"modifier":0,"sheetnames":[],"sheets_settings":[]},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1553583,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370888715","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"Constructivism is the theory where knowledge is first believed to exist internally. It connects information with the individual learner's experiences. The two types of constructivism are Cognitive Constructivism and Social Constructivism. Cognitive Constructivism shows how a learner's individual characteristics impact his or her learning. Social Constructivism taps into how one's interactions with others impact meaning and understanding. When put together, the main focus is the individual and the various aspects of life that go into making that specific person who he or she is. These aspects include culture and personality. The belief is that these aspects help the individual build their schema. Jean Piaget theory expressed the belief that knowledge is acquired by connecting it to one's experience. If the new knowledge can be connected to already existing knowledge, the learning will occur with few problems if any. However if the new knowledge conflicts with current beliefs or thoughts, the learning will have a harder time, called cognitive dissonance. This is an uncomfortable feeling that a learner will feel when simultaneously holding conflicting ideas. In addition, Piaget believed that learning also occurs when a learner interacts with his or her environment, meaning that applying the knowledge in the real world is paramount. Lev Vygotsky believed that putting the knowledge into practice in the real world is the only way that learning can take place. He proposed that there were two levels of development. The first was a level of development that a learner can reach on his or her own. The second is a level that a learner can reach with assistance from fellow learners or the instructor. Learners essentially work independently until they cannot do this anymore; another learner or instructor then steps in with assistance. Constructivism gives learners an active role in their education, giving them an opportunity to acquire knowledge by understanding why it is important to learn and how it is important.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1553914,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370890485","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"How do Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism effect online education? Because one can only display and assess one's acquired knowledge through the written word, it cannot be approached from a behaviorist standpoint because this theory approaches learning from a place of changing behavior to change learning. This is almost impossible to do from the detached world of online learning. The only way that this could be potentially altered is when electronics like web cameras and audio communication are implemented. Because this is not always the case, behaviorism would be difficult to implement. Cognitivism and Constructivism would be the more appropriate theories to use in an online education setting because they put more or all of the responsibility of acquiring on the learner. This is the way that learners must learn in the online classroom. The learner is given a great deal of information and must connect it to prior knowledge, as in Cognitivism. Constructivism is the most appropriate for online learning because it allows students to use their individual lives to help come to conclusions, work independently, and reach out to the instructor or other students if necessary. It is the epitome of how a learner in an online classroom must learn. There is a level of help that can come from asking classmates or the instructor, however a great deal of the learning happens by oneself.","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1554309,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370892959","particle_type":"bodytitle","picture":null,"text":"References","content_type":"","title":"","shrink":null},{"type":"particle","particle_id":1554311,"object_id":"breanayoungstallings1370892976","particle_type":"bodytext","picture":null,"text":"Stavredes, T.
