most people talk about banks being \"too big to fail,\" they're referring to the size of bank balance sheets. And rightly so. Over the past three decades, the nation's largest banks have accumulated more assets on their balance sheets than ever before. To name the most common examples, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America each boast more than $2 trillion in assets on their respective balance sheets alone. \n\nBut as you will see in the charts below, this only tells half of the story. The other half concerns assets that these banks actively manage or hold in custody for others. It's only after these assets are accounted for, which the banks admittedly don't bear the risk of loss on, that you can get a sense of just how massive and powerful our biggest financial institutions truly are.\n\nAs a side note, all of the numbers in the charts below are in billions of dollars.","picture":null,"particle_type":"bodytext","object_id":"johnmaxfield1367504882","particle_id":1112261,"type":"particle"},{"shrink":null,"title":"","content_type":"","text":"Bank of America - $3.0 trillion","picture":null,"particle_type":"bodytitle","object_id":"johnmaxfield1367504874","particle_id":1112258,"type":"particle"},{"shrink":null,"title":"","content_type":"","text":"Bank of America serves as a prototypical, albeit huge, commercial bank with a considerable asset management operation -- the latter was acquired via its 2008 purchase of Merrill Lynch. Add in a further $118 billion in assets under custody/administration (AUC) and you get a total of $3 trillion.
